Review: Logitech Create Keyboard Case for iPad Pro 9.7

Having reviewed dozens of keyboards for the iPad over the years, ir’a clear the Logitech Create is the best option for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

The Create is a portfolio case covered with water-resistant material that completely covers the expensive tablet front and back. It’s barely thicker than the slim iPad and provides modest protection from the bumps and drops of the day.

Inserting the tablet into the case is done by sliding it into the top side of the case. The tablet’s home button goes on the right which exposes the Smart Connector on the keyboard side. While the vast majority of keyboards for the iPad connect over Bluetooth, the Create uses the connector that was introduced with the iPad Pro.

This connection has advantages over Bluetooth, not the least of which is eliminating the need to have a battery in the keyboard unit. The Create draws power from the abundant battery in the iPad Pro. It also makes the keyboard instantly available when the tablet is placed in the connector slot above the keys. Powerful magnets pull the iPad in place when the tablet is close to the slot.

Opening and closing the portfolio turns the iPad on and off, respectively.

Due to the smart connection there is only one viewing angle possible for the iPad Pro. It’s a comfortable angle so I don’t find that to be a problem. Using the iPad without the keyboard is done by lowering it over the keys.

The keyboard is slightly undersized compared to those on laptops, but it’s close enough to make rapid touch-typing possible. In my case no adjustment period was necessary, I was able to type quickly from the beginning. This is due to the mechanical keys which feel natural and comfortable.

It has a complete key layout which includes the top row of keys to control the tablet. These include the Home key, screen brightness keys, and media play controls.

Above the keys, and hidden from the user’s view when typing, is a convenient slot for securing the Apple Pencil. It keeps the Pencil easily accessible when needed and prevents losing it when out and about. A negative with this slot is it causes the Pencil to sit on the iPad Pro screen when the case is closed.

I find the Create to be much better than Apple’s Smart Keyboard. I type faster with the Create and make fewer typos than I do with the keyboard from Apple. It cheaper than the one from Cupertino, too.

This is one of the best keyboard cases for the iPad period. The ability to store the Pencil alongside the iPad takes it to the next level. I would love to be able to use the iPad in portrait mode as well.
