The 9.7-inch iPad Pro with the Smart Keyboard by Apple together make the best mobile writing system I have ever used, and I’ve used a lot of them.
For such a system to work for me it must be good for writing volumes of text, have a display that is legible and comfortable to use, and it must be as small and light to make it easy to carry.
The iPad Pro and Smart Keyboard shine in all three areas. The keyboard, while slightly smaller than full-sized, makes it possible to touch type at a fast speed. This can be done for long periods.
There are some things it doesn’t have, specifically backlighting and iPad control keys, but it supports typing so well these aren’t deal breakers.
The display meets the second criteria handily. Even though it’s less than 10 inches it is bright, vivid, and crisp. Text is easy to read and my eyes don’t get tired after hours of use.
Using two apps side-by-side in Split View the content on the screen is still legible. I work this way for hours and I never thought this would be the case. The display is simply marvelous.
The third area is where the system really shines. The tablet in the keyboard cover is small and light (1.76 lbs.) and the combo fits in my small gear bag. I often get comments from those in the area when I take this thin combo out of this bag.
The iPad Pro in the Smart Keyboard cover is barely bigger than the iPad in a standard smart cover. The two together only weigh ounces more even with the keyboard tucked inside.
They are so thin and light when closed that it’s no surprise how well the keyboard cover works as a standard cover. There’s no need to remove the keyboard for pure tablet use. Just open the system like a book and swipe away. It is a game changer.
The 9.7-inch iPad Pro in the Apple Smart Keyboard meet my requirements so well that I am really appreciative of my great friends. The size is fantastic and the display never has me wishing it was larger. This is the best mobile writing system I have ever used.
